Flushing Airport from Monster.com Blimp - April 2000

This current view of Flushing Airport looks from west to east. The town of College Point is at the bottom of the photo. The angled road on the left is 20th Avenue, the northern end of the property. At the far side of the field, the structure to the extreme left is the U.S. Postal Service distribution center, and the large grey and blue structure to the left of the blimp car suspension cable is the New York Times printing plant. Just beyond those buildings is the Whitestone Expressway. The three old airport hangars can be seen below the New York Times facility. The airport runway, running left to right, and the ramp (aircraft parking) areas have sunk, and can be seen covered by water.

Airships Unlimited is interested in the triangular area just beyond the wetlands area. The left part of the field will be developed with the proposed museum, theme restaurant, flight crew facilities, sightseeing flight terminal and other entertainment/recreational structures that are being planned for the site. The airship operating area will be toward the right, just beyond the large pond. The planned reconstruction of Linden Place (the old airport road) will allow access to the facility without impacting the already congested 20th Avenue traffic.

Goodyear Blimp at Flushing Airport - 1976

Goodyear operated from the right hand part of the triangular area in the top photo. Turn this photo 120 degrees to the right to line up the runway direction with the top photo. The car pound has now been replaced by the New York Times facility. Note the blimp’s ground crew arrayed immediately forward of the shadow of the blimp’s nose.
